The officers of Marine and Preventive Wing of Customs Preventive Commissionerate, Mumbai booked a person in a case of smuggling involving goods of Pakistani origin goods which was apparently declared as goods of UAE Origin to mislead officials.
Based on specific information a Navi Mumbai-based importer of dry dates was booked. The importer had imported the goods by misdeclaring the same as dry dates from Dubai.
"Investigations showed that the accused Gulam Naqvi - resident of Navi Mumbai - had imported 20 such containers in the past six months and investigations of the said goods being conducted to find if similar modus operandi has been followed in the past," said an officer.
The proprietor of the firm Saaz Cargo, identified as Naqvi has been arrested for evasion of Customs duty worth Rs 1.86 crore and has been remanded to judicial custody till April 6, said the officer.
