The crime detection rate of the Thane police commissionerate has improved from 67 per cent in 2021 to 70 per cent in 2022, with 8,383 of the 11,961 crimes registered being solved, a senior official said on Saturday.
However, the number of rapes, molestation, murders, chain snatching, extortion as well as incidents of offenders posing as policemen to dupe citizens saw a rise, commissionerate data revealed.
In 2021, Thane police had detected 7,298 of the 10,869 cases registered, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Morale told PTI.

"This is a rise from 67 per cent in 2021 to 70 per cent in 2022. While 89 murders were registered in 2021, it increased to 93 in 2022, with the detection rate remaining 97 per cent in both years. Chain snatching cases increased by 81 in 2022 but we managed to solve 52 per cent cases against 43 per cent in 2021," the Additional CP said.
A total of 755 house breaking thefts were registered in 2022, though the detection rate fell marginally by 1 per cent when compared to 2021, he said.
"Motor vehicle thefts dropped by 66 in 2022 when compared to 2021 and stood at 1917, and police managed to increase the detection rate from 35 per cent in 2021 to 37 per cent in 2022. Rape cases increased from 340 in 2021 to 432 in 2022, while its detection rate was constant at 97 per cent," Morale said.
"The 432 rapes comprise 261 on girls below the age of 18 and 171 on those in the 18 plus segment. Molestation cases increased from 520, including 435 where the victim are above 18 years of age, in 2021 to 620 in 2022.The detection rate was 90 per cent," the senior official informed.
The number of cases of persons cheating others by posing as policemen increased from 14 in 2021 to 47 in 2022, while the detection rate in such incidents remained below 20 per cent in both years, he admitted.
Extortion cases registered in 2022, at 68, were 12 higher than 2021, while the detection rate hovered around the 80 per cent mark, he said.
The number of accident cases registered rose from 570 in 2021 to 655 in 2022, while the figure for kidnapping cases for last year stood at 1,003, with the victims including 303 boys and 677 girls below the age of 18, Morale said.
"The detection rate of kidnapping cases was 90 per cent. The number of cases of assault on public servants dropped from 94 in 2021 to 91 in 2022. We managed to solve 98 per cent of these incidents," the additional CP said.
