A court in Navi Mumbai has sentenced two men to two years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting an on-duty policeman.
Assistant Sessions Judge K R Deshpande of the Belapur court on Monday found the accused Sachin Ravindra Shikare (44) and Naresh Popat Kaleti (45) guilty of charges under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
The court sentenced them to two years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) E B Dhamal informed the court that on January 21, 2016, a police constable intercepted the accused at a checkpoint in Vashi suspecting them to be chain snatchers.

The duo, however, did not stop their motorcycle and sped past the policeman. The constable gave chase, caught them, and attempted to stop them.
The accused verbally abused the constable, tried to run him over with the two-wheeler and physically assaulted him. Other police personnel were alerted about the attack, and the duo was subsequently arrested.
Five witnesses, including the constable and his associate, were examined during the case proceedings.

On Sunday, Police in Navi Mumbai apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in 12 cases of house-breaking and theft. The authorities successfully captured the accused as they were attempting to flee to West Bengal. Stolen items, including gold jewellery valued at Rs 12.16 lakh, were recovered from them.
With assistance from the railway police, Navi Mumbai police managed to intercept the suspects, who were on board the Geetanjali Express at Wardha station on July 21, the official stated. The individuals arrested have been identified as Haider Anarul Sheikh and Yusuf Noor Islam Sheikh.
Both individuals have cases registered against them at various police stations including CBD, Turbhe, Koparkhairne, Panvel town, NRI Sagri, Rabale, Rabale MIDC, and Wadala railway police stations, according to the official. The duo is believed to be connected to a series of house-breaking and theft incidents, totaling 12 in number.
This arrest follows a separate incident in Navi Mumbai where a case was registered against four members of a family for allegedly verbally abusing and assaulting two women over a minor disagreement. (With inputs from agencies)
