Funeral of Borivli residents Ashish and Akshay, who died in New Zealand in an ice shelf collapse, to take place tomorrow

Friends and relatives of the Miranda family in IC Colony, Borivli are struggling to come to terms with the demise of Ashish (24), and Akshay (22), in New Zealand on Thursday, when an ice shelf (see box) collapsed on them while posing for a picture, with the Fox Glacier in the background.


While Ashish's body has been recovered,u00a0 Akshay's body could not be found. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow in Melbourne, Australia.u00a0 "I still can't believe they're gone," said Akshay's godmother Cynthia Miranda (60).

"Akshay had sent me some cash as a birthday gift on January 4. Little did I know that it would be the last thing, I'd receive from him," added Cynthia, who plans to buy a pocket bible with the money, in memory of the two boys.

The Mirandas left Mumbai for Melbourne in 1999. Both the boys were students of the Don Bosco High School in Borivli.

An ice shelf is a thick, floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. The world's largest ice shelves are the Ross Ice Shelf and the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica.
