Marathoners, come Sunday morning, don't stagger if you see policemen cheering contestants during the race.
They are cheering their own. Around 200 men in khaki will be running in the marathon this year.

ACP Surender Kumar Jaiswal says that the number of cops participating in the race this year has increased with 40 of them trying to finish the full marathon

No, they aren't practicing their sprinting skills to outdo fugitives and criminals, but they are adopting corporate management skills of team building.

The marathon is more than an event for us, informed ACP Surender Kumar Jaiswal (CID Branch), it's an excellent team and morale building exercise. Officers from the rank of additional commissioner's to constables will be running together.

"This is the first time that so many policemen have come forward for the marathon. Last year the number was barely 50, but this time around the response has been overwhelming," said Jaiswal.

Not to be left behind or reach the finishing line after the race is over, Mumbai folklore implies that they always reach the crime scene late the cops have been toiling for the past two months, preparing for the race.

Last year, the cop contingent put up an impressive display what with some of the officers clocking their best recorded times.

Jaiswal further added that out of the 200, 160 cops will aim to complete the half marathon while the remaining 40 will aspire to finish the 42-km marathon.

"We are a bunch of self motivated people, training without any special coaches. We have wriggled out time from our hectic schedule and odd working hours to train and partake in the marathon," said Jaiswal.

Marathon effort
"This is the sixth time that I will participate in the event and I plan to improve my last year's time," said retired ACP Sunil Temkar, who will join his ex-colleagues in the race and plans to run the full marathon.

Senior Inspector Pradip Lonandkar of Gamdevi police station stated that he has been practising for the event since last year in order to build endurance and stamina for the event. He plans to finish the half marathon in less than two hours.

Meanwhile, Additional commissioner Kaiser Khalid (East Zone), Mumbai and DCP Sanjay Mohite, are other senior police officials, who are expected to compete in the marathon.
