Scraping through the SSC or HSC exam is about to get tougher. The state education department has decided that a student must score 35 per cent in practical and theory exams individually to pass the board exams from next year.
Education Minister Patangrao Kadam said, "The education department has taken anu00a0 important decision. This will balance their studies."
School authorities also welcomed the rule. Raj Aloni, principal of Sir JJ Fort Boys' School, said, "Though it will be difficult for students, standards will rise if such a rule is implemented. Students will now take their studies seriously."
Shridhar Salunke, divisional chairman, Maharash- tra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, said, "The rule will bring about some seriousness among students."
Current rule
Students have to pass in a subject as a whole and not in each component. For example, if a student scores 20 on 20 in practicals, he has to score only 15 out of 80 marks in theory to score the passing marks [35].
