A 36-year-old Mumbaikar tested positive for the deadly H1N1 virus yesterday, becoming the city's first confirmed case of swine flu.

The doctors noticed swine flu symptoms when he arrived in the city from New Jersey, USA, on June 15 and immediately rushed him to the Kasturba Hospital near Jacob Circle.

Jairaj Thanekar, BMC executive health officer, said. "We have been giving him Tamiflu for the past four days.

It's a seven-day course. The possibility of the infection spreading has been ruled out. We urge people not to panic."

As of yesterday, the national count of confirmed swine flu cases was 50.

The H1N1 virus has claimed the lives of 180 people around the world.
