Want that dug up road fixed pronto? Ask Peddar Road residents how. Under pressure, the BMC that was supposed to take 45 days laying pipes, reduced the time to 25 days, then 15, then 9!Put pressure and you can get a lot out of the government. Take the repair and replacement work of rusty old storm water drains and sewerage line on Peddar Road. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in March that it would take 45 days to finish the Peddar Road work. Now it has brought it down to 25 days for the 240 metre-stretch of pipeline. The BMC is now confident of completing the same work in nine days, even though it had since said that the work would take a fortnight.
South Mumbai clout? You decide.

The BMC started barricading the Peddar Road, identifying spots requiring digging, and made it one-way from May 2. It will begin full-fledged work from May 3. The same work has now gone into fast track mode and is supposed to be completed within time. The BMC will dig up the stretch between Babulnath to Cadbury Junction to replace and repair an over 100-year-old pipeline, part of the delayed drainage work under Brimstowad project.
DL Shinde, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Engineering) and former Chief Engineer (Roads) said, "Due to vacations, the road will have less traffic." Officials say this period is perfect to carry out work as elections are over, schools are closed and many people would have left Mumbai to beat the heat.
There was a hue and cry from Peddar Road residents when BMC started work on March 30. Within few hours, work halted. The dug portion was leveled within a week and used by political parties for campaigning.
In the meantime, the Mahanagar Gas Ltd has also started laying a line through Peddar Road as part of its expansion project to supply cooking gas to Tardeo, Peddar Road, Marine Lines, Cuffe Parade, Mantralaya and Colaba.
