Cold fire: A short circuit in a newly installed AC is believed to be the cause of the fire. |
The incident took place at around 10.50 pm and it took about 30 minutes for a team of fire fighters to extinguish the fire.
Asgar Shaikh, a security guard deployed at the centre, said, "Although, I am trained to handle such emergencies, I couldn't do anything as the fire was really huge, and got out of hand."
When the store manager of the petrol pump was informed about the fire, he immediately called ICICI Bank and demanded compensation for the damage caused to the petrol pump.
It is believed that the fire was caused due to a short circuit in one of the air-conditioners installed inside the ATM centre.
A R Yadav, a fire official from the Byculla fire station, said, "A new AC was fitted in the ATM centre on Wednesday.
We assume that the fire might have erupted due to a short circuit in the machine owing to some defect in the connection."
He added that if the fire hadn't been controlled on time, the incident could have turned ugly as the ATM centre is located inside a petrol pump.
