Sadhana Amte, wife of late social activist Baba Amte, passed away on the evening of July 9. Sadhanatai, as she was affectionately known, actively participated in her husband's efforts to empower leprosy patients. She supported him in his efforts in the Knit India movement, the Punjab peace mission and the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Amte also authored Samidha, an autobiography of her life with Baba Amte.
Amte was fighting breast cancer for over a year. Despite surgery, her condition, coupled with kidney failure discovered in February, led to deterioration of her health. She was 85.
Amte lived her last days in Anandwan Ashram, a rehabilitative centre for leprosy afflicted and diseased persons from disadvantaged spheres of society, founded by Baba Amte in 1948, located in Chandrapur district in Maharashtra.
