The Kurla police arrested a man early on Friday for molesting a seven-year-old girl. Saiful Samshul Haq, 30, was picked up from his house and has confessed to the crime.
The cops have the child's elder sister to thank for nabbing the accused, as she noticed him touching her younger sister inappropriately inside an auto rickshaw and alerted her mother, who in turn told the cops.
According to the cops, Haq, a daily wage earner, lured the girl on the pretext of providing her a chocolate and dragged her inside an auto rickshaw. The incident took place on Thursday around 12.15 pm. Police sub-inspector Rahul Lokhande from Nehru Nagar police station said, "The girl was playing on the veranda of her house when the accused happened to see her play. He then called her down and took her to an auto-rickshaw stationed nearby, where he started touching her inappropriately."
However, the incident was witnessed by the girl's sister, who figured something was wrong and notified their mother about the incident. "The mother then rushed to the spot and saw Haq molesting her daughter. On seeing the woman, Haq picked up a fight but ran away when the girl's mother threatened to report his actions to the police," Lokhande said.
The girl's mother, however, persisted and lodged a complaint with the cops. Acting immediately, a police team was sent in search of the accused. "We found Haq in the area and brought him to the police station. He has confessed to the crime," added the officer.
The accused hails from West Bengal and arrived in the city three years ago in search of a job. Haq has been booked under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of the Children Protection Act. He was produced in court on Friday and has been remanded to police custody.
