The police recovered the corpse of an Australian national from a hotel in Colaba yesterday.

The man, identified as Desponten Travis (34), had come to the city on January 6 and was staying in Apollo guesthouse situated above Cafe Leopold in Colaba.

Travis was supposed to leave for Delhi yesterday, but when he didn't check out of his room, the authorities decided to enquire.

When there was no response from his room even after calling and knocking repeatedly, a hotel employee unlocked the door using a spare key.

According to the police, when the hotel employee entered the room, he saw Travis lying on the bed, bleeding from his nose.

He was immediately rushed to the nearby St George hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The police have recovered his passport and a diary from his belongings.

Earlier, the police was suspecting that Travis died of alcohol overdose, till they found his diary, which mentioned that he was suffering from depression.

The body has been sent for postmortem and the police are awaiting reports.
