Government employees on the lower levels seem to be trying very hard to outdo each other in amassing ill-gotten wealth. Just days after mid-day reported on the crorepati police constable from Thane, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Mumbai, found out that a BMC licensing inspector, nabbed while accepting a Rs 40,000 bribe, could give him very stiff competition.

The inspector from the H-West ward, Sachin Gajanan Sankhe (44), may have been accepting the bribe from a bhelpuri vendor, but his tastes in where he spends the money seem rather refined. The ACB found that he owns three flats, four cars including a Toyota Fortuner and a Honda City and a scooter.
They also found 18 tolas of gold (worth more than Rs 5 lakh), Rs 1.7 lakh in cash and are likely to find much more as they haven't yet checked his bank accounts.
Red-handed
Sankhe, a resident of Mira Road, was arrested on Tuesday while allegedly accepting Rs 40,000 from a bhelpuri vendor who operated a stall in Bandra (under the H-West Ward's jurisdiction). The licence of the stall was in the name of the vendor's father and he had applied for a transfer, but had got a notice to stop business.
"He was called by the inspector, Sankhe, who demanded R50,000 as bribe to let him continue operating his business. The hawker approached us and we asked him to negotiate and they then settled on Rs 40,000 amount," said Pravin Dixit, director general of police, ACB, Maharashtra.
Sankhe was nabbed by the ACB when he was accepting the bribe and was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
