lampposts at the BMC garden near Hinduja Hospital, which have been put up on a trial basis, turn out to be a feasible option.
Depending on the utility of these two lampposts, the BMC will replace the lampposts in 865 gardens in Mumbai, including recreational grounds, and Nana Nani Parks. "The initial installation cost is high, but it will at least help conserve electricity. We are presently trying it at Mahim," said V H Dande, superintendent, gardens, BMC.
Saving power The initial investment for setting up these lamps inside gardens will be Rs 20,000 per lamp, while the existing lamps costs Rs 15,000. A solar expert said, "A CFL bulb fixed on a lamppost in a garden uses 70 watt, but a solar bulb with light emitting diode (LED) uses just 8 watt." The solar lamp is expected to run for 50,000 hours, as compared to 5,000 hours of a normal bulb.
The success of these lamps will also decide if the 40,000 streetlights across the city will be changed to the solar mode.
S Puranik, additional general manager, BEST, confirmed that they are studying how the solar panel works. However, the cost of replacing these bulbs with solar panel bulbs is more than Rs 30,000 per lamppost. Streetlights need a bigger and better battery than a garden lamppost.
What are LEDs?Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit, but unlike ordinary bulbs they don't have a filament that will burn out or get hot
They form numbers on digital clocks, transmit information from remote control, light up watches, indicate when appliances are turned on and illuminate a traffic light
