Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has said that they will take strict action against those found selling tobacco or tobacco products near the civic schools in the city
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will take strict action against those found selling tobacco or tobacco products near the civic schools in the city.
Chairman of the BMC Education Committee, Vinod Shelar, told this to students of the 'Salaam Bombay' Foundation in the city on Friday.
Against the backdrop of the 'World No Tobacco Day' observed on May 31, students and representatives of the Salaam Bombay Foundation, a Mumbai-based organisation working for the welfare of children, met Shelar and urged him to take stringent action to ensure that the civic schools remain tobacco-free.
"Strict action will be taken by the BMC against the tobacco sellers, that sell any form of tobacco near school premises. Municipal schools in Mumbai would be made 'tobacco free'. The peon staff of the schools will also be asked to ensure that no form of tobacco is consumed on the premises. We will also put up warning boards at all the schools," Shelar said.
BMC officials will conduct checks at the schools and take appropriate action in case there is a violation, he said.
