Cops clueless as two unidentified assailants shoot at secondhand dealer of bikes in Nagpad
Two assailants on a motorbike fired two rounds of bullets at a 34 year-old friend of a 1993 blast accused in broad daylight in Teli Mohallah in Nagpada on Saturday.
The victim, Sohel Majid Khan, who was hit on the ankle by one bullet, is recuperating at JJ Hospital and is out of danger.
Nagpada police carry out investigations at the spot where the shootout
took place
According to a police source, Khan is known to be friends with Ehtesham Sheikh, an accused in the 1993 blasts and an accomplice of Chhota Shakeel. Sheikh is currently lodged in Arthur Road Jail and Khan has on a few occasions visited him, carrying homemade food for the prisoner. Khan himself has two forgery-related cases registered against him, one in 2003 and another in 2004.
According to eyewitness accounts, Khan was reportedly talking to a builder-friend outside his office at 2.45 pm, when a Yamaha bike passed by, their riders face covered with a white cloth. When they got closer, one of them fired on Khan.
The assailants, however, managed to escape, despite the road being crowded.
According to police sources, a live bullet has been recovered from the spot and they will watch recordings of CCTV cameras in nearby areas for clues. Khan's statement will also be taken to find out if he suspected anyone or if he had received any threat.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Of Police (Crime) Nisar Tamboli said, "According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants were on a bike. Their faces were covered with white cloths, and the accused who fired the gun was wearing a white shirt and blue trousers."
Earlier this year on May 17, four assailants, two riding on a motorbike and another two on foot, had approached Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar's car near his residence at Pakmodia Street in South Mumbai. The group had opened fire at the car, leading to the death of Kaskar's driver-cum-bodyguard.
