The Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued notice to Maharashtra government, the Commissioner of Police Nagpur, Superintendent of Nagpur Central prison and sought their responses on the deteriorating health condition of a professor of Delhi University arrested a year ago for alleged links with Maoists.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A K Menon took suo moto (on its own) cognizance of the matter after a letter written to it by activist Purnima Upadhyay highlighting the condition of G N Saibaba. Saibaba was arrested last year by Maharashtra police for his alleged links with Maoists. He is lodged in Nagpur prison.

According to the letter written by Upadhyay, Saibaba is 90 per cent handicapped due to post-polio paralysis and is bed-ridden. The High Court has directed the authorities to file their affidavits giving details of Saibaba's health condition and the status of the investigation against him and if a charge sheet against him has been filed or not.

The court will hear the petition on June 17.
