EVEN as the electronic media flashed breaking news on the police nabbing three people in connection with the murder of MiD DAY's crime bureau chief J Dey and speculated on Chhota Shakeel being the men's boss, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil refused to confirm or deny the reports.
Soon after the news of the arrests broke, the CM was asked about it in his weekly Cabinet meeting media briefing.

But, he refused to comment and said that appropriate authorities would brief the media on it.
Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Umeshchandra Sarangi confabulated with Home Minister R R Patil for over half an hour following u00a0which Patil met Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik.
Replying to media queries, Patil refused to corroborate the Chhota Shakeel theory. "The police have got some important clues and they will crack the case soon," he said.
When reporters insisted, Patil said "a different modus operandi" was used in the murder and the police would come out with results.
