Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, 69, was rushed to JJ Hospital from Arthur Road Jail after a severe drop in his blood platelet count. It was suspected that the former deputy chief minister, arrested in March this year in a corruption case, may have dengue. However, the hospital's blood test report confirmed otherwise. Yet, to rule out any misdiagnosis, Bhujbal will be provided with systemic dengue treatment.
"We will also conduct an ELISA test to reconfirm if dengue can be ruled out. The fall in platelet count is a symptom in dengue. As there were no proper facilities in the jail to treat such a patient, he has been admitted to the hospital," said a JJ doctor. Dr Tatyasaheb Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital, confirmed further diagnosis was going on and that Bhujbal was in the ICU unit of the hospital. "He has a fever, headache, loss of appetite and joint pain," said Lahane.
Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer are behind bars in a R870-crore money laundering case.
