Union Home Minister P Chidambaram reviewed the security of Mumbai at a high-level meeting last evening, in which senior police officers including Commissioner of Police Hasan Gafoor, Joint Commissioners Rakesh Maria and K P Raghuvanshi, were present.
The aim of the meeting was to review the security arrangements in Mumbai and the role of the underworld. This comes, particularly, after the Research& Analysis Wing's (RAW) interception hinted that Pakistani ISI was plotting to use Dawood Ibrahim and his right-hand-man Chhota Shakeel to bump off 26/11 terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Qasab.
Chidambaram stressed on presenting a watertight case to prove that Pakistan was behind the Mumbai attacks. He also asked officials to file the chargesheet relating to Qasab as early as possible, so that he could be tried and punished by a court.
Senior Crime branch officials said they would file the chargesheet by February 24. The safety of Qasab in Arthur Road jail was also a major concern.
The meeting also pointed out to earlier human intelligence failures and ways and means to strengthen the system. Meanwhile, the Crime branch has increased security around Qasab to foil any attempt on his life. He is heavily guarded and entry to the police headquarters where he is housed is restricted.
