The Mumbai Crime Branch (CB) yesterday pleaded an extension of 45 days from the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court, to file a chargesheet in the murder case of veteran journalist J Dey.
The court, however, adjourned the matter till today.u00a0 Dey was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne assailants
in June this year, allegedly at the behest of underworld don Chhota Rajan.
Following Dey's murder, Crime Branch arrested 10 persons for their alleged involvement in the case and slapped MCOCA on them on July 8. Moreover, it has been learnt that the investigators are likely to name Rajan in the chargesheet, along with firearms supplier Nain Singh Bisht.
Earlier, the Crime Branch had been directed by the MCOCA Court to file a chargesheet by November 4. As per the procedure, the Crime Branch can file a chargesheet within 180 days of invoking the MCOCA. However, after completion of 90 days, they must seek the court's permission for any further extension.
Citing the reason for the delay, an officer said, "We need to investigate certain aspects of the case, including the role of certain journalists."
