Barely a week after announcing that crime rates have reduced in the city and a month after the death of tainted cop Arun Borude, the Mumbai Police has been left with the proverbial egg on its face again with another rape allegation being levelled on a constable.
Constable Ganesh Laukumar (22) was arrested by the Kurla police yesterday on charges of raping his colleague's 15-year-old daughter.
Laukumar, who is attached to the Colaba traffic division, is a resident of the police lines in Kurla, where the victim Swati (name changed) also stays.u00a0
"Laukumar and the victim knew each other since the past few months as they stay in the same police locality.
In her statement, Swati, who is a Std IX student, said that Laukumar borrowed a car from a friend and convinced her to go with him to Virar in Thane district. He took her to a resort and booked a room," said a senior official from the Kurla police.
"Once inside the room, Laukumar allegedly repeatedly raped her. He later threatened Swati and told her not to discuss the incident with anybody. She returned home in the evening," he added.
When the complainant seemed very frightened and unusually quiet after returning home, her parents asked her what was wrong. She broke down and told them about the incident.
The family approached the Kurla police station and a complaint was registered against Laukumar the same day.
"The constable has been charged with rape and criminal intimidation. He may be removed from his job under the provisions of Section 311 of the IPC if the rape charges are proved," said a police official.
