Yesterday, the traffic police department initiated a special drive against two-wheeler motorists across the city,
and will be conducting surprise checks at junctions across the city.
On day 1, departments across the city fined 511 motorists for driving on the wrong side, 415 for cutting lanes, and 16 for driving rashly. Rash drivers were each made to cough up a fine of Rs 500.
Confirming the start of the city-wide drive, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nandkumar Chougle said, "We have received numerous complaints from motorists against bikers, who often violate traffic norms, endangering lives. We have called for a city-wide drive to take action against the same."
A majority of the 900 cops attached to the city traffic police department have been roped in for the special drive, which will be conducted between 11 am and 6 pm every day, for the next few days.
Yesterday, the airport traffic division fined 78 people for driving on the wrong side, while the DN Nagar division fined 82 motorists for lane cutting. The Wadala traffic division fined five for driving rashly.
Chougle added, "Time and again, we have cautioned bikers against violating traffic rules, but they refuse to mend their ways. Now we will come down heavily on them."
"Instructions have also been issued to traffic cops to check if the bikers and those riding pillion are both wearing helmets, and also check the vehicle and its insurance papers. We plan to impose stringent and maximum penalties on the bikers take traffic rules lightly," said Chougle.
He added, "We had made JJ flyover a no two-wheeler stretch, and this move has helped save many lives, but many bikers surreptitiously drive on the stretch when cops aren't looking. We will be keeping an eye on this stretch. We do not wish to harass the bikers, but to ensure that they follow traffic discipline and save pedestrians' lives."
