Fire Brigade and Navy officials were set in action yesterday after an unidentified youth was swept away by choppy waters at Nariman Point.
According to officials, the man, whom they assume was approximately 25 years of age was last seen walking on the tetra pods yesterday morning at 9.30 am.
Officials patrolling the seas immediately informed the Fire Brigade and the Navy who rushed in for rescue operations. However, the high tide hindered the rescue operations.
Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Deepak Ghosh said, "The moment we got the news we immediately came to the spot and tried rescuing the boy.
My officers went into the deep but he had disappeared in the water as the tides were very high."
According to bystanders, a chopper was also called in but all efforts were in vain, as even after surveying the water for more than 45 minutes, the boy was not to be found.
Navy diving officials also tried finding the unidentified youth but after five hours of search operations and three diving attempts, officials gave up the rescue at 11.30 am and handed over the case to Nariman Point police station.
