Flyer arrested for possessing diamonds worth Rs 3cr at Mumbai airport

A 32-year-old man was arrested from the Mumbai international airport on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle out rough diamonds of over 6,900 carats worth Rs 3.28 crore


Officers of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) have arrested a passenger who was travelling to Bangkok for allegedly trying to smuggle rough diamonds weighing 6975 carats and valued at Rs.3.28 crores out of the country.

The 32-year-old, identified as Ramesh Babubhai Bambaniya, was held while he was looking to catch the Bangkok-bound Jet Airways 9W-60 flight.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that Bambaniya wasn't carrying any documents to establish the origin of the diamonds and also did not have the mandatory Kimberley Process certificates.

Thus, the same were seized under suspicion that they were being smuggled out of India in violation of Customs Act.

After found guilty the passenger was arrested and will be produced in the court on Friday.
