Last evening, DGP Parasnis retired after an extension of three months that the government had granted him and handed over charge to the current senior-most IPS officer in the state, Subramanyam, at the Maharashtra Police Headquarters in Colaba.
Parasnis had taken over as DGP on February 28 from D Sivanandhan. Subramanyam and Parasnis both belong to the 1976 batch of IPS officers.
Subramanyam, whose first posting was in Islampur in Sangli district, has spent five years with the vigilance department of Bharat Petroleum.
Besides stints in Pune, Chandrapur, Satara and with the Central Bureau of Investigation, he has spent about two decades in the city on various assignments.
"We are too dependent for intelligence inputs on the agencies; we should ourselves develop a network wherein intelligence inputs should come out at the police station and beat marshal (constable) level," said Subramanyam at a packed press conference.

"The force needs to be made more efficient in terms of work and I will also look into modernisation of security systems."
Parasnis thanked everyone for the support that he got in his 35 years of service.
Subramanyam's post in the ACB will now be filled by former police commissioner and Director General (Housing) Sanjeev Dayal, who is from the 1977 batch of IPS officers. Principal Secretary (Home) Pravin Dixit, an officer of additional DG rank, has been promoted and posted as DG (Housing), replacing Dayal.
