Two days after a woman's body was found bundled in a Mumbai local train, the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been flooded with calls from the kin of missing persons. On Wednesday, the GRP received six calls, one from Panvel, two from Virar and three from Mumbai enquiring if the body found matched the ones of the missing cases.

Based on the preliminary reports, the police have ruled out sexual assault or rape in the case. On Monday, the GRP officials received a call from a porter informing them about a gunny bag lying in the compartment. On investigation, the police found out that it was the body of a woman in her mid or late 20s who had been murdered by throttling her neck. Her body is yet to be identified.

"The bag in which the body was found contained heaps of clothes, blankets and a mosquito net," said Tukaram Chavan, GRP commissioner. "She appears to be from a community which exchanges utensils in turn of old, tattered clothes," he added. We are trying to ascertain if she was a resident of Virar or had come to the city from Gujarat.

Senior police officials said that they are probing all angles including a love affair gone awry and a financial motive triggering the murder. The woman's body before being spotted was murdered 8-10 hours prior to bundling the body. "Currently, we are working on the clues to identify the woman. The CCTV footage from Virar station will be scanned thoroughly," said ACP Dattaray Sidam.
