That elections are managed by money is a well-known fact. But open acknowledgement of this from gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli's daughter Geeta is rare.
Gawli lost his seat to Congress's Madhukar Chavan from the Byculla constituency yesterday.
Geeta, who managed his campaign when he contested the election from Taloja jail, responded to allegations against Akhil Bharatiya Sena about distributing money, with a defiant, "Who is not distributing money? Everyone is doing this. We distributed money too, but we lost."
Gawli's moneyChavan, however, said, "Last time, people voted for Gawli's money. This time since he is in jail his reach was limited and we could work for the people. As a result, I won the election."
With 36,302 votes, he won the battle by more than 9,000 votes.
MNS candidate Sanjay Naik emerged as his closet contender with 27,198 votes. Gawli came in third with 25,703 votes.
