OVERWHELMED by the demand from passengers, the Central Railway has decided to hire six new cooks for the Jan Ahar outlet at CST within two weeks of its launch.

Although the outlet already has five cooks, CR officials say food gets over by evening owing to the constant stream of passengers dropping in for a bite.

The Jan Ahar outlet at CST was inaugurated by CR's General Manager Kul Bhushan on March 3. The restaurant can accommodate 80 people at a time and it serves both fast food and thalis

Located at the mainline concourse of the station, the joint has been catering to nearly 20,000 people every day and is churning out profits of Rs 10,000 on a daily basis.

The restaurant serves both fast food and meals and items on the menu are priced between Rs 10 and Rs 35 with thalis costing just Rs 22.

It has a take away counter as well as an eating area, which can accommodate 80 people at a time. It was inaugurated by CR's General Manager Kul Bhushan on March 3.

The ground floor of the outlet, which serves fast food, is open around the clock and the top floor, which serves thalis, is open between 6 am and 10 pm.

A K Singh, PRO, CR, said, "Passengers like the food that is being served at the outlet and are attracted by the price factor as well. The demand has been very high right from the beginning.

With the success of Jan Ahar at CST, we are also planning to open such outlets at Dadar, Thane and Kalyan stations." Mumbai Central also has a Jan Ahar, which was inaugurated on January 26.

"We are also in the process of opening such outlets at all divisional headquarters like Pune, Solapur and Bhusawal," he added.

The Jan Ahar scheme is the brainchild of the Passenger Services Committee of the Indian Railways.

The outlet is being maintained and run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for now, but it will soon be taken over by the railway department.
