MiD DAY Statement on the detention of suspects by Mumbai Police in the J Dey Murder Case
MiD DAY is glad that 16 days after the brutal murder of its Crime and Investigations Editor J Dey, the Mumbai Police claim to have made an important breakthrough in the case. They have detained a number of suspects (unspecified at this point in time, and the number varies from six to nine depending on who your source is), and there is opinion at the highest level in the Mumbai Police that there is enough evidence to produce them in court.
While MiD DAY has supported the Mumbai police in their investigation so far, it also believes that the force should produce all the evidence necessary for the case to stand up in court. There is no need for cynicism at this juncture, but it is also important, given the significance of the case, that the Mumbai Police tread with caution so that the courts can analyse the evidence with confidence and not with scepticism.
MiD DAY is independently assessing the progress in the case, and will make further statements, if necessary.
