The five had provided fake Scheduled Tribe caste certificates to win a seat to the management course; they had been expelled in August
Five students from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) have been booked by the Marine Drive police for submitting fake Scheduled Tribe (ST) caste certificates and caste validity certificates for admission to the college.
Police sources said, that the students have been identified as Shail Shah, Parth Shah, Ronak Doshi, Dhawal Sanghvi and Prerna Pardeshi. All the five students have already been expelled, but the college had been waiting for the university's nod to file an FIR against them, which came last week.
In August this year, a forged documents racket was unearthed in the medical as well as management studies admission process. Grant Medical College had lodged FIRs against nine students.
After that, three top management institutes, JBIMS (five students), Sydenham Institute of Management Studies (eight students) and LN Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research Institute (two students) expelled their students.
JBIMS had participated in the centralised online admission process for MMS (Masters in Management studies) for the academic year 2016-17 during May 2016. The process had started from June. During this process, candidates had to upload their documents and certificates on the website of Directorate of Technical Education. "The college started the verification process only after the admissions were over. There we found that five students had given fake caste certificates, so we expelled the students," said Balkrishna Parab, vice-principal of JBIMS.
"Then, to lodge a complaint against the students, we sought permission from the Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai university, which we received last week and hence, registered a complaint against the students," he added.
Speaking to mid-day, a senior officer from Marine Drive police station said, "The registration number marked on the educational certificates belonged to some other students. Five students whose documents were under the lens at the JBIMS have submitted documents from Ambejogai, Beed and Nandurbar district, yet most of them belong to Gujarat," said sub-inspector Dinkar Chakor.
