A 27-year-old resident doctor at Parel's KEM Hospital died in the casualty ward of the hospital, after suffering a cardiac arrest on Monday.

Omprakash Sharma

Dr Omprakash Sharma, who was working in the Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) department of the hospital, had completed his MD exams about a week back. The incident took place around noon, when Sharma started complaining of breathlessness.

"He was relaxing after his exams ended on May 31. On Monday, he was in his hostel room, when he started to feel uneasy. He went to the casualty ward around 11 am and all of a sudden, he collapsed," informed a doctor from the hospital, adding, "He started getting convulsions.

Some professors and residents rushed to put him on ventilator support before performing CPR on him. Despite their best efforts, he was declared dead around 11.30 am. As far as we know, he was not suffering from stress, nor did he have a history of heart ailments."

Sharma's parents, who hail from Chandrapur, were informed about the incident. They are expected to reach the hospital today, after which his body would be taken for post- mortem. A doctor, on the condition of anonymity, said that the autopsy could only be conducted if the parents gave their consent.

Cops from the Bhoiwada police station were called and they took statements of the doctors present in the ward at the time of the incident. Despite repeated attempts to contact Dr Shubhangi Parkar, the dean of KEM Hospital, she remained unavailable for comment.
