Three people have been held for murdering a 65-year-old man and injuring his wife on Monday. The men said they murdered the couple because of a long-standing feud between their families.

The deceased Lahu Narayan Beturkar and his wife Jayabai Beturkar resided with their son Chandrakant and his wife Vasanti in Beturkar pada in Kalyan West. They had a decade-long feud with the Waghes, which was only intensified post the visarjan on Sunday, when the Waghes were served a notice for creating noise pollution in their procession. They suspected the Beturkars of calling the police, when they hadn't even made the call. The families' land dispute feud was further fuelled by the Waghes suspecting Beturkars of ratting to the cops about their son, who is wanted in a molestation case since last year. The visarjan incident intensified the animosity.

Attacked with hammer
The murder took place early Monday morning, when the senior citizens were sleeping in the compound outside their residence, while the son and daughter-in-law were inside the room. "They were attacked with a chopper, hammer and sharp knife on different parts of the body. During the brutal attack, Lahu died on the spot, while his wife Jayabai suffered injuries to different parts of the body and is undergoing treatment," said a police officer from Bazarpeth police station.

Two accused absconding
A case was registered at Bazarpeth police station under section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and different sections of the Arms Act.

On Wednesday, the crime branch sleuths arrested Krishna Waghe, Suresh Waghe and Gorakhnath Waghe, while two other accused Aloknath Waghe and Tandu Bhaiya are absconding. "When we interrogated Chandrakant, he suspected the Waghe family's role. So we further started searching there and after getting clues, arrested them," said Sanjay Sable, senior police inspector, Ulhasnagar crime branch.
