Thane-based family get down at Thane station but forget bag of jewellery in the train. AT LTT, GRP cops finds it, contacts the family telling them their bag is safe

It is a rare phenomenon but, sometimes, gold shines through the khaki. On Wednesday, the family of a Thane-based security guard, fretful after forgetting a bag of jewellery aboard a train from Uttar Pradesh (UP), were relieved of their anxiety when they got a call from the police, telling them their bag was safe.

The Kurla Government Railway Police (GRP) traced the family after one of their men found the bag laden with ornaments in the Godan Express. Shiv Narayan Gorakhnath, who works with Voltas as a security guard, had gone to UP with his family for a wedding. On their way back, they alighted at Thane station, albeit without the bag.

"They came via the UP Godan Express on Wednesday and got down at Thane around 3.30 pm. Gorakhnath was accompanied by his wife, mother, brother and brother's wife," said Shivaji Dhumal, senior inspector of Kurla GRP. "In the rush of getting down, they forgot one of their seven bags." They realised the oversight only after they had reached home, and were frantic. This was, after all, the bag packed with jewellery worth R3 lakh.

Meanwhile, Assistant Sub-Inspector Nivrutti of Kurla GRP, who was deputed at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus found the bag, brought it to the police station and reported it to his superiors. Senior Inspector Dhumal opened it and found a box of jewellery in it.

"I called up the jeweller, Prem Jewellers in Thane, told him about the type of jewellery, and asked him if he remembered the person who got it made. We then traced the family and called them to the police station," said Dhumal. For the family, this was more than they had expected. "I am thankful to the police. They have returned my life's savings. I thought I had lost all the jewellery," said Gorakhnath.
