Sources in CIDCO revealed that a private firm had presented such a plan to CIDCO as well as to the NMMC recently. "Tata Realty had conducted a survey of the approximately 5km stretch from Vashi railway station to Koparkhairane and presented the concept to CIDCO and NMMC officials. The proposal is yet to be reviewed thoroughly," said an official from CIDCO.

As per the survey, the ropeway would start from Vashi station and pass through the internal roads passing through sector 17 of Vashi and finally end at Teen Taki junction near Koparkhairane. The project could be considered part of NMMC's smart city project, sources added.

Navi Mumbai has been short-listed as a smart city along with nine other cities in Maharashtra, out of 32 cities in the state which were in the race. The estimated Rs 200-crore ropeway project would have a gondola ski lift coach with a capacity of 150 passengers.

"The entire 5 km stretch would have six stations. However, both CIDCO and NMMC are yet to take a decision on it," a source said. At present a lot of office-goers rely on share auto rickshaws for travelling to Teen Taki junction from Vashi station.

There is no fast alternative mode of transport available that covers the 5-km route. If the current plan becomes successful, then the ropeway could also be extended to other busy areas of the city.
