An altercation took place between MNS activists and supporters of Congress candidate Sanjay Nirupam in a north west suburb following which his police bodyguard fired two rounds in the air to disperse the crowd, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place when Nirupam had gone with some supporters to the Lokhandwala complex area of suburban Kandivali last night where about 200 MNS activists stopped him and questioned what he was doing there, they said.

"A resident, Bhavna Visaria, has filed a complaint stating that they questioned Nirupam why he was present in the area and alleged he was carrying cash in some bags in his vehicle," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Amar Jadhav said.

Around 200 activists of the MNS allegedly surrounded the vehicle and attacked Congress activists who were travelling with Nirupam, he said.

"Fearing a threat to life, a police protection guard, Kiran Tandel, assigned to Nirupam fired two rounds in the air to disperse the crowd. There were no injuries," Jadhav said.

No cash was found in Nirupam's vehicle, he said. Two complaints have been lodged by Congress and MNS activists and further investigations are on, he said.

In both the cases sections of IPC pertaining to unlawful Assemby have been applied, Jadhav said.
