Reasoning that 22-km Trans Harbour Link will attract development and more people to port area, housing dept proposes townships to cater to their needs
Planet Mumbai is likely to get another satellite city, thanks to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which will connect Sewri in South Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in the neighbouring district of Raigad.

After the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) decided to construct the 22-km sea link, the housing department has proposed a township in Nhava Sheva along the lines of Navi Mumbai.
The department feels that once the MTHL augurs massive development in Nhava Sheva in terms of infrastructure, attracting many multinational companies and factories and a sizeable workforce, which will require housing.

To cater to this population, the department, in coordination with CIDCO, plans to set up small satellite townships in the area.
Minister of State for Housing Sachin Ahir told MiD DAY, "Yes, we have plans to set up small satellite townships in Nhava Sheva and Raigad in coordination with CIDCO and MHADA.

Once the MTHL is complete, the area will see massive development in terms of infrastructure. MNCs are likely to come up, drawing a lot of workers. And we want to provide them affordable housing."
Ahir has already discussed the plan with Housing Secretary Gautam Chatterjee, and will soon write to the State Urban Development Department to seriously consider the plan.
Once the UDD gives its nod to the project, a feasibility study for the project will be conducted.
Further, the ever-increasing population and congestion in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Vasai and Virar have further necessitated the need for such a township to decrease the burden on these cities, officials said.
Said MMRDA Commissi-oner Rahul Asthana, "MTHL will transform the way the city travels. With this link, the vast areas on the main land would be available for expansion of the city in future.
This will also help boost development in Navi Mumbai, Raigad and surrounding areas, while enabling speedy movement to and from the proposed international airport in Navi Mumbai."
Longest sea bridgeThe proposed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link the longest sea bridge to come up in the entire country connects Sewri in the island city to Nhava in Raigad.
The link is 22 km long with a 16.5 km bridge across Mumbai harbour, and a 5.5-km long viaduct to approach both Sewri and Nhava sides of the bridge.

Interchanges are proposed at Sewri leading to the Eastern Freeway, and at Chirle leading to NH 4B to facilitate traffic.

The Rs 8,800 crore project will be implemented on a public-private partnership model, on design-build-finance-operate-transfer basis.
