Mother-son duo taken into police custody: Vakola suicide case

Supposedly fed up of the mental torture meted out by her mother-in-law and husband, Atme, who was two months pregnant, ended her life on Saturday night. Based on the suicide note left behind by the woman, the police has arrested the duo. They will be presented in the Bandra court on April 2.

According to the Vakola police, Kumud hanged herself from the ceiling fan in the bedroom of her flat in Abhishek Building, Santacruz (E), around 9 pm on Saturday.

The incident took place when her husband, Deepak (31), was away and her mother-in-law, Sonabai (58), was in the other room. It was Sonabai who found Kumud's body. She immediately informed her neighbours, who called the police as well as Deepak, who runs a kerosene supply agency in Thane.

An officer from the Vakola police said, "A case has been registered against Deepak and Sonabai under Section 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention)."

The suicide note
In the suicide note she left to her father Shivaji, Kumud mentioned that her mother-in-law regularly taunted her, and her husband would never take her side. Kumud and Deepak were married on November 16 last year. Soon after, her husband and mother-in-law allegedly started taunting her over small issues. However, the torture had increased drastically in the last two months.
