Mumbai: Customs catch man who brought gold worth Rs 71 lakh into city

The Air Intelligence unit of Mumbai Airport Custom have caught a charted accountant who brought gold worth Rs 71 lakh in the city. Investigations revealed that the CA had brought the gold in several attempts.

Saurabh Umbare, according to customs sources, was first nabbed last Friday for possessing a gold chain, which was brought illegally worth Rs 13.50 lakh. He was hence arrested. According to officials, the preliminary police investigation revealed that Umbare was working in Dubai since long and, from the last six months, was frequently travelling to Mumbai.

The official added that he brought one or two gold biscuits in his pant pockets every time he travelled. He further informed that the man used to sell gold to various jewellery shop owners. This way, he made 15 percent commission.

"We are now investigating further and checking if more people are being involved with Umbare," said the official. The total value of gold sold till date has amounted to Rs 55 lakh.
