Around 6 pm, he decided to step out of the building for a while and went to the elevator. Still distracted by the victory, however, he failed to notice that the lift car was missing and stepped into the empty elevator shaft, falling four storeys.
His family and friends raised an alarm when they found what had happened, but they saw that he had suffered major head injuries and blood loss. They rushed him to Nanavati hospital, but he was declared dead.
Senior Police Inspector Padmakar Chavan from Santacruz police station confirmed the incident and said, "The 16 year-old died accidentally. After the incident came to light, the youth was taken to the nearby Nanavati Hospital, but he was declared dead before admission. On the basis of preliminary investigation, we registered an accidental death report (ADR) and are conducting further probe."
