Humsafar Trust sent letters and e-mails on July 8, asking the MPs to discuss Section 377 during the monsoon session in the Parliament
A total of 545 letters were despatched from Mumbai last week to the corresponding number of Members of Parliament (MPs) across the country, asking them to support the LBGT community and discuss Section 377 in the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament. The letters were sent by Humsafar Trust, one of the oldest NGOs working for LGBT rights.
Koninika Roy, advocacy manager at Humsafar Trust, said, "We are trying our best to get as many people as we can on our side in this regard. The letter asks the politicians to support us in the Supreme Court. Besides sending letters, we also sent e-mails. Jay Panda (Biju Janata Dal) and Shashi Tharoor (Congress) have responded. The letters were despatched on July 8."
She added that though Tharoor tried to introduce a private bill suggesting amendment of Section 377 twice in the past - December 2015 and March 2016 - it failed to come up for discussion due to lack of support in the Parliament.
