A 16-year-old boy, forced to work as a servant in a house at Marine Drive for a month, was rescued by the police on Saturday. Officials said he was brought to Mumbai from his parents' house in Bihar by his uncle and forced to work in the house.

Finding himself alone for the first time on Saturday, the boy called the Mumbai police control room on Saturday afternoon and told cops that he was locked up in a house in Firdos building at N S Road.

Senior Police Inspector Pandurang Shinde of Marine Drive police station said, "The boy was brought by his uncle Jalal Safi (37) to Mumbai a month back for household work. He was asked to work at a flat at Marine Drive, but he didn't want to work.

On Saturday, when there was no one at home, he tried to leave the house. The door was locked and he couldn't open the latch. After trying to open it for a long time, he dialled the police control room and said he had been locked up."

Roles unclear
Police said the boy was hired for Rs 5,000 a month by the owner of the house, a marketing executive. The police are also going to investigate the roles of the executive and his wife.

Police arrested the boy's uncle Safi, a resident of Kemps Corner, on Saturday night. He was presented at the Esplanade holiday court and remanded in police custody till August 26. The police have booked him under the Child Labour Act.
