The mastermind behind the gang rape of a minor girl has been apprehended. Bandra police arrested Mohammed Saifudin Pathan alias Arif Mulla who, along with his friends, allegedly abducted and gang-raped a 17-year-old last month.
Police said Pathan, in his early twenties, knew the survivor, and that she and he stayed in Bandra. He had asked the girl to marry him. When the girl rejected him, a furious Pathan and his friends Firoz Haider Sayed (26), Rakesh Premalal Verma (22), Rahul Gopi Rathod (19) and Hazrat Nazir Khan (28) abducted the girl on August 6.
Three of them allegedly gang-raped the girl, gave her Rs 200 and left her at Bandra at 6 am the next day. They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the incident. The girl later registered the case with the Bandra police.
Police said Pathan is a history-sheeter, with many theft and molestation cases against him. He was even externed by the police in January this year. Police arrested the friends last month, but Pathan had managed to flee.
Inspector Shailesh Paslavar said, "Our officer got information that he is going to arrive at Mahim Causeway. They laid a trap and arrested him around 4 pm on Saturday." Police also recovered a country-made revolver and two rounds of ammunition. He was presented in holiday court yesterday.
