A 50-year-old woman was arrested last morning from her Mira Road residence for running a clinic without possessing the proper qualifications. The quack, Sunita Chhajeda, who operated the clinic from her residence in Shrusti Complex, was arrested after the RMO of a local municipal hospital lodged a police complaint against her.
After receiving several complaints from the locals, an NGO, Grahak Manch Seva, informed the Commissioner of Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation on Saturday, who ordered the RMO of Tankar Pada Government Arogya Kendra hospital to rope in the Kashimira police and conduct a raid at Chhajeda's residence.
A team of police officers and medical experts raided her residence yesterday and she was arrested.
"She has a degree in Ayurveda and electropathy but operated the clinic by claiming to be a gynaecologist. She also prescribed allopathic medicines. Since she wrote in English, her patients could not sense anything foul for five years," said Dr Ashok Damu Tadvi, the RMO involved in the raid.
Police found out that she did not even have the proper registration either with the Mahanagar Corporation or with the Indian Medical Council.
"We have registered a case against her under Sections 33 and 33 (a) of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act 1961," said officer Ravindra Pardhi, Kashimira police station adding that she was remanded to two-day police custody.
