PSI Milind Rajaram Hirve
Police earlier this week arrested a police sub-inspector for allegedly cheating a 60-year-old Byculla doctor of Rs 61 lakh. The cop allegedly did so under the pretext of enabling the victim's daughter's admission to a Post-Graduation course at KEM Hospital and Medical College. The sub-inspector claimed he had a contact in the Mantralaya through which the admission could be managed.
Dr Abdul Wahid Ansari, 60, a resident of Byculla, gave a total of Rs 60.50 lakh to PSI Milind Rajaram Hirve and his three associates. In 2016, when Dr Ansari was trying to get his daughter admission, his neighbour Niyamat Khan told him about PSI Hirve, posted at Nagpada police station, who could help with it.
PSI Hirve assured the doctor that the education minister's quota could be used for the purpose.
Three people involved
Dr Ansari was asked to pay in instalments of R40 lakh and R30 lakh before and after the admission respectively. In March 2017, the PSI met the doctor along with Khan and another Prasad Kamble. Hirve told Dr Ansari that Kamble was the minister's security person who was supposed to be handed over the remaining money.

Hirve, Khan and Kamble together took a total of R60.50 lakh from Dr Ansari in instalments but the admission was never done nor was the money returned.
Dr Ansari soon made a complaint at the Nagpada police station against three people but he was told by Hirve that the money would be returned. Tired of waiting, the doctor filed an FIR in December last year and Hirve was eventually arrested this week.
"Hirve said he is a police officer and must be trusted. That's why I gave him the money," Dr Ansari told mid-day.
