A Chennai-based resident, who has two wives, was caught smuggling several kilograms of gold at the Mumbai airport on Wednesday. The man and one of his wives was caught by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department.
The couple is reported to have smuggled four kilograms of gold which is estimated to be worth over Rs 1 crore. The woman, who has been identified as Shivadevi Balachandran, was hiding the gold in her undergarment.
Considering her odd behavioural characteristics customs officials stopped and interrogated Balachandran. Based on her confession, the woman and her husband, Balasubramaniam, were arrested.

A report in the Times of India states that the man revealed his modus operandi, whereby he would alternate between his wives to avoid suspicion and smuggle gold from abroad. His wives would hide the gold in specially made brassiers to evade arrest.
He also admitted to having sold his flat for Rs 65 lakhs to begin his smuggling operation. The group has successfully smuggled gold a couple of times in the past.
