The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Explosives of another kind
The launch of journalist and now bestselling author of Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up at NCPA last evening was a well attended one, with Mumbai's literati there in a show of strength. As Ayyub said at the start of the session, she began with 500 copies. The number is now 27,000.

From Ayyub remembering meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for tea when he told her he wanted to be like Obama, to former commissioner Julio Ribeiro recounting a dinner party he attended in 2002 where he was shocked at how Hindus were talking about Muslims in Gujarat, to lawyer Vrinda Grover sharing that all police officials who spoke up against the government have cases registered against them, it was a launch of explosive declarations.

Much like those in the book, Ayyub, in the middle of reading a passage on BJP president Amit Shah (a senior police official recalls a time that Shah asked him to get rid of an accused in jail), said, "We need to know these are the people we put into power." The session's moderator and senior journalist Hartosh Singh Bal quipped, "Buy the book while it's still selling."

Life in a (green) Metro
In an age of green-this and green-that, kiddie entertainment centre, KidZania India, and Mumbai Metro joined hands on World Environment Day (June 5) for a weeklong activity.

The initiative is to mark the travel facility's second anniversary with eco-friendly activities for kids at Ghatkopar's Metro station.

The station has a greener world set-up where commuters are being given tips on how to protect the environment via a temporary mini museum, prepped with environment-friendly installations. Ghatkopar Metro Station will don these green colours till June 12, to commemorate the Metro's second anniversary.

Book or film? Take your pick

Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor and children's book author Anushka Ravishankar share a laugh at the release of the novelisation of Dhanak yesterday at a bookstore. Ravishankar's book is based on the children's film made by Kukunoor that comes to cinemas on June 17.

Man or mannequin?

Taking the plunge
There are dives, and there are dives and then, there are people, who will go to any lengths or depths in fact, for the safety of the city. With the monsoon being a particularly challenging season for Mumbai, every arm of the public service seems to be gearing up in different ways.

We spotted some rescue action at Marine Drive where firefighters conducted a mock drill near the promenade. After all, come the rains, and Marine Drive will be packed with people treading dangerously on tetrapods, waves breaking against the walls and rising in fury, couples canoodling underneath umbrellas and daredevils stunts performed along the wall. Here's hoping for a safe monsoon.

What's cook(ie)ing?
The next time you are in Kala Ghoda, the alluring aroma of freshly baked cookies might draw you to the newly launched Oh Dough, Kala Ghoda's first cookie shop.

The cutesy interiors of Oh Dough
