A 32-year-old woman filed a complaint of molestation after a Twitter contact called her âfat' twice on the site. As per Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police, Dadar division the woman is a resident of Dadar and filed a complaint against a Twitter contact saying that he defamed her.
The police said that the man, who is said to be from an African nation and had tweeted saying, âfat people don't have the right to live.' The woman then posted a comment in opposition of the man's statement which led to an argument. "The argument continued on both sides, where the woman and the accused wrote a series of comments with inputs and comments from other people as well," said an officer from Shivaji Park police station, who did not wish to be named as per reports by the Hindustan Times.
When the argument escalated, the man allegedly called the woman fat and abused her. "Based on the woman's statement, we have registered a case under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code [for outraging a woman's modesty through gesture or words] against an unknown person."
The police are not trying to find out the identity of the accused from the twitter ID provided. An officer said, "We have found out that the accused lives in Africa, but we are confirming his identity through the username and profile on his Twitter account which can be fake. We don't want to share the id and alert the accused into deleting his comments."
The case will not be forwarded to the cyber cell department and they are likely to investigate the matter further.
