A 16-year-old girl has alleged that her 28-year-old cousin raped her four times on the night of November 11. The accused then asked her to keep quiet, threatening to harm her and her family, if she disclosed the assault to her family members. The girl stayed quiet for more than a week, but mustered up the courage and informed her father about the incident on November 20, after the accused forced her to join him again.
After hearing about the horror his daughter had to undergo, the father registered a complaint with the Ghatkopar police station, following which the accused was arrested. Police said the accused was identified as Javed Jaman Shaikh, who works as a driver, and is the minor's aunt's son.
"The accused had approached the family on the day of the incident, requesting them to send the minor with him, since his distant aunt was ill and he needed someone to tend to her. Since he was their close relative, the family agreed," said a police officer from Ghatkopar police station, on condition of anonymity.
Shaikh, however, then took the girl to his friend's residence, which is in the vicinity of their houses. "The room belonged to his friend, and Shaikh was occupying it to keep his household items, since his residence was under going renovation," said the police officer.
"After reaching the place at 1 am, the accused told the girl that he was waiting for his friend to arrive, after which he would drive them to his unwell relative's house. He then went to sleep. Worried with the turn of events, the girl got terrified and requested him to take her back home," added the officer.
Shaikh, however, started forcing himself on her and raped her four times. He then dropped the survivor to her house in the morning, but not before threatening to harm her and her family. For days, the survivor didn't share the details about the incident, but when Shaikh started forcing her to come with him again, she confided in her father, who immediately brought it to the attention of the police officers.u00a0
The accused has been booked under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. A case has also been registered against him under section 4, 6 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Shaikh was produced in court on Thursday and has been remanded in police custody.
