Thane: At least eight retired persons here were allegedly duped to the tune of Rs 74 lakhs by two persons who promised them MHADA houses under the 10 per cent reserved ministerial quota, police said today.
PI MS Mane of Kolsewadi police station under Kalyan division told PTI that the two accused--Pravin Sankhe of Virar and Vasant Sawant from Bandra--have been booked for cheating these senior citizens.
The duo is absconding and a manhunt has been launched for them, she said. Police have registered offences under section 420 of the IPC against them after a complaint was lodged by one Bhagwan Mhatre (65) and six other elderly, who were told by the accused that they would get them MHADA flats from the quota.
The duo took money from time to time in cash and cheque from them since November 16, 2014, the complaint stated. When the duo could not be contacted by the victims recently and started evading them, the cheating came to light, it added.
